Air Purifier Buying Guide

Clean air is the best gift you could give yourself or your family. Think of your air purifier as an ally in your charge against air pollutants in your home. Standard airborne particles in most homes may include mold, pollen, pet dander, dust mite allergen, plant spores, and fungus. You may also have to contend with gases and odors from indoor pesticides, aerosols, cooking, pet litters or tobacco. Watch out for VOCs or Volatile Organic Compounds that are found in paint, cleaning liquids, glues, and carpets: a quick look at their ingredients may indicate the presence of benzene, chloride, formaldehyde, etc- they have been associated with many health problems. There are also the standard threats of microorganisms like bacteria, viruses, antigens, and pathogens that are germs that can bring on illness.

Next, think about where you will want to have the air purifier(s) located. Are there spots in the house that are likely to have a high concentration of pollutants- like a living room with pets- or are you going to focus on purifying the air in the bedrooms, since that’s where you spend most time at home. A portable air purifier can be used anywhere dry in your home. If you’re going to be moving it around often, you may want a model that is compact or portable. Coverage areas will make a difference to the performance of your air purifier, so be sure to take into account the dimensions of your rooms. Do buy as per the recommended coverage area or even higher.

Choose the right filter for your needs. Look for air purifiers with multiple filtrations for better performance. More filters mean better screening for pollutants and increased removal. Most popular air purifiers come with HEPA® filters (High-Efficiency Particulate Arrester) that can clean up 98% of airborne particles. Additional carbon filters can help with odors. Some purifiers use UV light, electrostatic technology or electronic filtration to target the smaller polluting particles. Purifiers with ion or ozone generators can emit ozone, which can be a risky irritant for people with chronic lung problems. Make sure to look at the Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) on the product. Purchase only air purifiers with sealed systems that prevent dirty air from leaking. Also, keep an eye on consumer reviews for white noise levels generated by purifiers.

You will need to maintain and replace parts like filters, so make sure to factor in the cost and availability of these parts when you choose a model. Do find out what the warranty on the product will cover and keep aware of any consumer action that may void the warranty (like not purchasing replacements in the stipulated time period). To make the best of your air purifier, you will have to run it continuously. The better air purifiers are energy efficient, but there will be an impact on your energy bills nonetheless.

A little smart exploring and voila! You’re well on your way to hitting the purchase button for clean air in your home. Educate yourself reading indoorbreathing.com blog.

An Air Purifier As Your Household Help

 Air Purifier reviews

There are 3 basic types of air purifier: expensive, more expensive, and OUCH. So how do you separate out the hype and bring a breath of fresh air to the subject? It's called caveat inhalator, or, breather beware! There seems to be an inverse relationship between the amount of research done and the money wasted.

Does just walking into your home make you sneeze, make your eyes water, and make your nose run?

Then you probably need an air purifier. Sure those medications your doctor prescribed help, but now's the time to take the next step. But with so many choices, where do you start?

The most complex air purifier systems are based on ultra-violet light (UV) technology. Viruses are too small to be filtered by HEPA or traditional air purifiers. These air purifier systems are usually installed in heating and cooling ducts and currently start around $300, plus installation. UV air purifiers often combine HEPA and carbon filters to clean the air of multiple toxins. Hospitals and government buildings often use UV/HEPA combo systems. That right there should serve as a pretty good endorsement.

Getting the Best Cleaning an Air Purifier Offers

If you have severe allergies and money is no object, your best bet is an air purifier that uses a HyperHEPA filter, like the IQAir HealthPro air purifier (about $700.) Another air purifier shown to be effective against allergens is the Friedrich C-90A air purifier (about $500.) If you're on a tighter budget, try one of the portable air purifiers that use an old-fashioned air filter (about $70). These are usually smaller and clean a smaller size room, so multiple machines will be needed for a home.
Air Purifiers with Filters

For those in a location where you have to dust every day, or if you're trying to reduce dirt in your house, try an air purifier that uses an air filter like the 3M Filtrete air purifier. Research shows that air purifiers remove dust, pet dander, and common allergens. Smoke and many odors, however, still get through. Filter air purifiers typically cost about $70 and filters need replacing four times a year. These are best for small spaces, so pick up a few for your home.

Ionizing Air Purifiers

Ionizing air purifiers are a good choice if you have smoky rooms or if you are dealing with odor problems. Consumer Reports, however, did find that ionizing air purifiers are not very effective when it comes to taking getting those pesky particles out of the air. One example of these ionizing air purifier systems is the Ionic Breeze air purifier, which costs about $300. This air purifier takes a different approach when it comes to air purification. First, they emit negatively charged ions into the air. These negative ions attract the smoke and odor particles, which are positively charged. When the positive and negative ions connect, they form a new particle. This particle becomes too heavy to float in the air, so it falls into the collection plate of the air purifier or simply onto the floor. This mess is easy enough to clean out with a cloth and a vacuum cleaner.

Low Ozone Air Purifiers

Low-ozone air purifiers are a bit different from ionizing purifiers. These air purifiers oxidize the pollutants in the air. As a result, your home is left with nothing but clean, breathable oxygen. You need to be careful with low ozone air purifiers, though, because they can be harmful to your health if they are turned up too high. In addition, you need to watch out for the metallic smell these air purifiers can cause. It can be a bit irritating if you have a sensitive nose. Ozone air purifiers are usually combined with ionizing systems and cost about $500.

Other Options

You can also choose to use a low-tech air purifier. These have been proven to work well in all home and office environments. They are also easy to maintain because all you need to do is change the air filters on your air conditioning and heating system every month. This simple procedure will reduce dust, dander, and allergens by as much as 50%. In addition to being silent, low-tech air purifiers are cost-effective, costing only about $20 every three months. Just don't forget to change the filters or they become ineffective.

You can also run a humidifier to improve the quality of the air in your home or office. These handy machines can help reduce molds in the air. Many types and models are available, with the average humidifier costing about $30. You will need to get one for every room, though.

Finally, you can try a more natural approach. Living plants can also serve as air purifiers. These natural purifiers remove carbon monoxide, benzene, and formaldehyde. Gasoline, oils, paints, and rubber all contain benzene - you certainly don't want to breathe that in every day! Some great plants you can use to help purifier your air are English Ivy, Gerbera Daisy, and Mums. Most are available at home improvement stores and nurseries for about $10. Not surprisingly, the more of these plants in a room, the better they are able to filter the air.

Of course with this method, it helps to have a green thumb. Nobody wants to run out and buy new plants every month because the old ones died.

In the ever-increasing battle to separate not only the good air from the bad but also the good customer from the bad money, it all comes down to one thing. Either do your homework or pay the price.

What is an air purifier and why should you have it

What is an air purifier and why should you have it

An air purifier is a machine that eliminates contaminants from the air in a place. These contaminants are dust mites, pollen, mold spores, pet dander, germs, tobacco smoke, household goods and pesticides etc. Why should you eliminate these contaminants? These air pollutants can induce asthma attacks, as well as itchy eyes, sneezing, and runny nose. Tobacco smoke can create even more serious health effects, covering lung cancer, according to the American Lung Association.
The market is full of air purifiers and you have to understand why you should purchase one or another. When choosing an air machine, first consider your indoor air condition needs. If you have allergies, choose an air purifier designed for allergy, if asthma then air purifier for asthma and so on.
You don't need to have any specific need to purchase an air purifier.
You can use them to improve your indoor air quality and create a healthier living area for you and your family. I recommend you use an air purifier in your bedroom or in the room you waste the most time in. Regular air filtration helps reduce potentially dangerous contaminants from your air, either the pollutants are added during cleaning, drawn in from the outdoors, or just stirred up with day-to-day life.

What you should know about your next air purifier

  •          Size and best location for it
  •          Features
  •          Noise level
  •          Maintenance

Size and best location for it

Each air purifier can cover a certain area. The more powerful an air purifier is the larger space it can clean. This step is easy. Calculate your desired space area and compare it to air purifiers stated capacity. I just want to make a point here. If you have 500 square feet large area choose an air purifier which points 600-800 square feet. In this case, you will be able to run your air purifier with lower speed and so it will be cheaper to maintain and less noisy.
Now about actually air purifier's sizes. There are available small desktop air purifiers, tower air purifiers, medium to large-sized portable air purifiers and whole-home air purifiers. Well, in my opinion, it doesn't matter much because mostly the more powerful is an air purifier the larger it is in size. So for small rooms small air purifiers which you can place anywhere. For large rooms large machines.
The location is much more important than air purifier size. Always place an air purifier closest to the pollution source. For example, if someone is a smoker in your home then this is a place where you should locate an air purifier. In this way, an air purifier will quicker catch the particles that are providing you trouble.
Do not place an air purifier in the corner. They have air intakes near the front or back of the machine. You don't want to buy a plant and cover it, right? Air purifier doesn't want that either. Better hold several feet of room at the top, front, and sides for optimal performance.
Some resources says to keep air purifiers away from electronics. But I will leave this on your own responsibility because I have not tested that on my own.
If you put an air purifier close to the doors or windows make sure they are closed.
Anyway, if you have a portable air purifier you can transfer it from place to place throughout the day. You can always move it away from your way if it is disturbing you.
Anywhere you decide to place your air purifier, be sure to operate it daily so that your air purifier friend is managing your home clean and comfortable.

Air purifier features

Air purifiers have a lot of features.  Most of them you don't need. At least I don't. Some of them, on the other hand, are very useful.
Controls. For me, it doesn't matter if there are electronic buttons or digital. I just want them to be simple and understandable.
Monitor. Well, this is good but most of the air purifiers show information wrong because sensors are near an air purifier. Better use separate air quality monitors placed somewhere further away from the device.
Remote Control. This is for lazy people.
Multiple Fan Speeds. This is a must. At least 3.
Filter Replacement Indicator. I don't trust them. Just clean or replace filters by feelings.
Timer. Helps to turn on and off several times throughout the day. Helps to save energy.
Handles and casters. Great to have them. Easier to move the device.

Noise level

Most of the air purifiers have fans and they will definitely release some level of noise. If an air purifier has several fan speeds then always first ones will be quieter and last ones louder.
Most air purifier companies place a decibel (dB) number for each fan speed. Here you can see dB compared to other sounds.
Decibel (dB) Equivalents
0 dB    Hearing Threshold
10 dB    Normal Breathing Sounds
20 dB    Falling/Rustling Leaves
30 dB    Average Whisper
40 dB    Light Rainfall
50 dB    Heavy Rainfall
60 dB    Box Fan on High
70 dB    Vacuum Cleaner

Remember that noise levels are varied for each person. Even decibel results can sometimes be lying since many elements can change the sound level, including the position of the air purifier.

Maintenance
You will have to follow your air purifier condition. Regular maintenance will help you to keep your air purifier working efficiently for the longer time. The most work will be with the filters. Depending on how many air purifier filters your device runs, you might need to replace them or clean at various times. Pre-filters should be cleaned quite often. It can be 4 times per month or less depending on how polluted is your indoor air. HEPA filters last longer. You can clean them, you have to replace them approximately once a year. Sometimes more often, sometimes less. That's why when buying for an air purifier, be sure to consider the price and frequency of scheduled filter replacements.
The more often you will follow your air purifier condition the longer it will work.
